Year 5 Autumn Term


In maths year 5 will be developing their understanding of place  value, looking at numbers up to 1,000,000; formal methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and the bus stop method for division; reading and interpreting graphs and tables and finding the area and perimeter of composite rectilinear and compound shapes.

In English year 5 have been reading the Great Kapok Tree, a Tale of the Amazon Rainforest as well as The Expolorer. The children will be rewriting the story; looking at the effect deforestation has on the environment; writing their own story set in the Rainforest as well as learning about relative clauses and model verbs.


Year 5 are exploring living things and their habitats and animals including humans. They will be describing the  life cycles of amphibians and insects as well as identifying ways in which some plants reproduce.


Year 5 are studying how and why do Christians read the Bible and Christmas, the gospels of Matthew and Luke.


In topic the children are exploring the Amazon Rainforest in South America. They will be addressing the issue of deforestation, identifying animals which live there and the layers of the Rainforest. They will also be learning about the Mayan Civilization.


In computing the children will be learning about coding and will be programming a simple game on scratch.


The children will be creating their own jungle scenes in the form of Henri Rosseau.

Design and Tehnology

The children will be making wind chimes.


The children will be developing their skills in gymnastics, netball, hockey and basketball as well as increasing their knowledge and understanding of the relationship between the body and exercise to improve fitness levels.
