Curriculum

Spring Term

Happy New Year! Welcome back!

This term our topic is 'Water, Water!'

We will be learning about the countries that make up the UK, their capital cities and the surrounding seas. We will look at Liverpool and its location – focusing on the history of the Albert Docks and finding out if any famous ships have docked there. We will also be finding out who Edward Teach was.  We will be learning about changes in living memory as well as significant historical events, people and places in Liverpool.

In Science we will be learning about materials and their properties. We will be planning simple investigations and carrying them out to draw our own conclusions.  We will use our conclusions to help us design and make a pirate ship. Later in the term we will be looking at plants and the changes the seasons bring.

We are continuing to focus on our writing this term. We must make sure we are thinking carefully about our spellings and using Fred fingers to help us sound out words. It is also important that we use our neatest handwriting in all our work and take pride in our presentation.  We will be focusing on developing and building our sentences – making sure we are using full stops, finger spaces and capital letters where needed.  We will continue our daily Read, Write, Inc lessons to help us improve our reading and our writing.

For Mathematics this term we will be developing our addition and subtraction skills and begining to relate them to problem solving.  We will begin to look at sharing and grouping number and telling the time to o’clock and half past.  We will also be using a variety of measuring equipment and learning how to read a measurement correctly.

In our R.E sessions we will be looking at why Jesus was special. We will find out about who his special friends were and how they tried to follow his teachings.  We will look at the celebration of Easter and dicuss the circle of life and new beginnings.

In Art and Design we will be studying the life and works of Claude Monet – looking at his use of colour, shape and light.

For P.E we will be developing our coordination skills and practicing throwing and catching.

We have a busy term ahead, Year One. Are you up for the challenge?
