At St.Oswald's we aim to ensure that pupils become confident and inquisitive mathematicians by the time they leave in Year 6. We place a large emphasis upon number skills to ensure that pupils are able to add, subtract, multiply and divide using mental and written methods. Pupils are also encouraged to learn their multiplication and division facts.

Alongside this, we develop pupils' mathematical thinking, reasoning and problem solving skills.

We support children in their learning by providing them with opportunities to:

  • use concrete objects and/or act out an idea or skill
  • use visual, pictorial representations e.g. bar models to represent problems
  • use abstract representation- the symbolic stage where there is an understanding of formal methods

Resources we use for Maths:

  • Abacus
  • White Rose Maths Hub
  • NCTM
  • Nrich maths
  • IXL- Each child has their own log in for regular practise
  • TT Rockstars-Times tables rock stars is an online programme of daily times tables practise which has very successfully boosted times tables recall speed for lots of our pupils.

Children have been given individual log ins for TT Rockstars, Abacus and IXL to use at home to support learning. If you are unsure of your child's log in please inform you child's class teacher.
